How does FPV work?

Hi everyone,
Here is a short article explaining how FPV works

A simple FPV system is based on 4 components:

FPV components

They’re all connected to each other by wires or wireless:

The camera captures and transfers video signal to VTX which transmits it through airwaves to the VRX. You can then display this video signal on a FPV monitor or FPV googles.

It’s frequent to add an OSD to have precious information displayed on the screen. An OSD is added between the camera and the VTX to add information such as the battery voltage or the GPS coordinates of the RC model.

Here are frequently asked questions by FPV beginners :

Is it easier to fly FPV than flying on sight?

It’s actually easier to fly FPV since commandes are never inverted. However, it’s highly recommended to be able to fly on sight before putting FPV equipment on your model.

What range can I expect?

With a basic system (200mW 5.8Ghz) and 2db antenna, the range should be about 400 meters.

Can I install FPV equipment on any model?

Generally yes, it depends on the model’s dimensions and the FPV equipment’s weight. Also some models (like Skywalker planes) will be more appropriate for FPV.

What FPV equipment should I buy?

That’s a long answer question, I’m writing a complete guide for choosing FPV equipment that I’ll post very soon. cet article pour plus d’informations.

Can I fly wherever I want?

No you can’t, there are specific rules depending on the country you live in. But usually it’s absolutely forbidden (and dangerous) to fly above urban areas. What if your model falls onto somebody? That’s sadly what a lot of people don’t think of.
